Australian employers can nominate skilled international workers for this Visa when they can’t find an appropriate skilled worker in Australia. The visa holder can work in Australia in their nominated occupation and may have a pathway to Permanent Residency. Nominees can be inside or outside Australia during the application process.

Skills in Demand Visa Requirements

Employer sponsored visa application: This business must be operating lawfully in Australia and must also meet the correct employment practices.

Nomination Application: the employer needs to show efforts have been made to hire an Australian worker, and the need of a genuine position in the business is needed. The role must fit on the list of eligible short-term skilled occupations.

The visa applicant must meet the skills required for their occupation and 2 years of full-time work experience (or part-time equivalent) within the last 5 years.

You may only work for your sponsor or associated entity.

Meet certain minimum standards of English language proficiency.

Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.

The Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy is paid by employers who sponsor skilled workers from overseas. Your sponsor is required to pay the Levy fees once they begin the nomination process.
The levy fee depends on the business size:
- Small business with turnover of less than 10million AUD will need to pay 1,200 AUD yearly
- Larger businesses with turnover of more than 10 million will need to pay 1,800 AUD yearly.
You can include your family members, de-facto partner, spouse, children, and partners children. You will need to show that your children are fully dependent on you financially, mentally, socially, and physically.
Once your subclass 482 application is lodged and being processed you unfortunately can’t add your family members to your application. However, family members that want to be included after the lodging has occurred can apply for the ‘subsequent entrant’ visa stream. This visa is also available for subclass 457 visa applicants. Family members will need to submit their own application and pay the visa fees separately.
Yes, you can change employers. However, you will need to submit another nomination and visa application.
For the subclass 482 visa to be valid, you are required to be working in the same occupation as your nomination. If you want to change occupations, you will need to check your eligibility for a new 482 visa.

- Copy of your passport
- Proof of experience and qualifications
- Proof of English (unless exempt)
- Partner’s and children’s documents (if applicable)
- Your skills assessment (depending on your occupation)
TSMIT is set at $76,515 for nomination applications lodged on and between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026.
